2.3 Kings and Queens

Scene from film Gattica

My chosen film:
GATTACA

DIRECTOR: ANDREW NICOL
(NZer)

The mood created in the scenes of this movie are constructed so elegantly, with a strong use of colour and dynamic architecture. The elements in each frame are placed in a harmonised composition, and create eace even when the sequence was chaotic. The atmosphere built felt as if the story was happening on another planet or an alternate universe, which is what I find very inspiring about this film.

MOOD BOARD:
I searched on Pinterest to find Gattitica scene stills, as well as architecture and imagery which reminded me of the theme.

As shown above, the words I chose were:
DYNAMIC, SPIRAL, ILLUSION

With reference to these words as well as my mood board, I designed some pieces which fit to the theme, most of them with swervy and spiral like shapes. I chose to do a QUEEN chess piece (more elegant)

PROTOTYPING 3 DESIGNS:
I chose three unique designs (one simple, one spiral, one edgy. I also chose these to try out as I could only make smaller models due to limited clay.

Through prototyping, I got a slight grasp of what the chess pieces would look like, as well as the difficulty of crafting them on rhino. I ended up choosing the one on the left, as it was simple and elegant.

FINAL PLAN:

This was a rough Idea of the shape I wanted, however I would play around more in Rhino to see what I can make.

3D MODELLING

I found 3D modelling quite challenging (navigating the space, using commands).
Initially, I chose the design on top left to create on rhino, however, I realised that my 3d modelling skills were not great enough to create the type of sculpting that I wanted, as I wanted the side spiral to be less of a tube and more of a square, so it looked a bit off: (Top left).

On Rhino, I did lots of trial and error, constantly altering my design. Out of random experimentation, I generated an interesting spherical shape, which I used to create one of my other planned options, as well as trying different pipe shapes/sizes to add to the object to see what worked best.

FINAL MODEL

My final design consists of a curvy trunk, as well as spiral pipes around it, and spherical objects in-between, as well as a cylindrical base for support. The style portrays a more scifi/fantasy like look.

REFLECTION

I believe that my final design came out more interesting and detailed than I expected, and did capture the mood of my inspiration movie (Gattaca) with it's spiral structure. But it does not look as angular or calculated like my original plan.

I think there are quite a few things I would do different if I went through this process again. It would have been extremely useful if I had spent a few hours reseraching sculpture objects, watching rhino tutorials and exploring all the different features and shapes I could create - this would broaden my object possibilities as well as skills. Therefore, my final design was limited to the shapes that I knew how to create (spheres, pipes, cylinders), and missed out on some potentially beneficial tools e.g. utilising boolean difference to create unique negative space.
